CRIME ANALYST | About the Position
Have you ever wondered what it is a Crime Analyst does?
As a Santa Clara PD Crime Analyst, you would be working in our Investigations Division alongside our Property and Persons Crimes Detectives, offering your expertise regarding current crime trends and statistics about criminal activity and known criminal offenders. This position is a non-sworn professional role within the Police Department and does not require Police Officer experience.
A Crime Analyst performs a variety of duties such as gathering, compiling, and interpreting data, which helps them identify crime trends using electronic spreadsheets, desktop publishing, word processing, and other statistical applications. The information is then utilized to identify and interpret criminal patterns to aid in the deployment of resources to prevent crimes.
It is extremely important the SCPD Crime Analyst maintains a consistent and current understanding of laws and technology. They are also responsible for handling sensitive data and confidential information with tact and discretion.
The work of a Crime Analyst is highlighted through written and oral briefings, as well as through presentations using maps, charts, and graphs that inform the department of emerging or existing crime patterns, and trends, as well as suspect and victim profiles.
This role is unique in the sense that it allows the Analyst to use their own creative style to showcase their work, and then present their findings to various groups, such as department personnel, other government agencies, and also the public. Sworn personnel at SCPD will be able to review crime information reports, patrol bulletins, monthly and quarterly activity summaries, and specific statistical/research reports all prepared by the SCPD Crime Analyst. Their analytical findings and investigative support help Detectives and Officers reduce criminal activity in certain areas, solve crimes, and ultimately help make our communities safer to live in.

Unlike what you might see in a Hollywood movie, Crime Analysts do not venture out to crime scenes and their interaction with the public is minimal.
